It’s official. Nokia is back in the game with their new Android smartphone, the Nokia 6.

HMD Global, which holds the right to the name, announced today the first ever Android-powered smartphone to bear the Nokia brand. The announcement shocked technology websites and grabbed people’s attention away from CES 2017. The announcement became a headline all over the world.

The Nokia 6 will feature 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of on-board storage with a microSD support. The phone will also include a 16 megapixel rear-facing camera, 8 megapixel front-facing selfie camera and 3,000 mAh of battery. Sadly, this device is only exclusively available in China via JD.com in “early 2017” which will retail for 1,699 CNY or $245.

Design and display

The design isn’t that spectacular at all. Nokia 6 is a monoblock form smartphone with an aluminium unibody which is quite common for midrange handsets. But HMD Global make sure that it will look as “premium” as possible.

“With the arrival of Nokia 6, consumers will see superior craftsmanship and design quality in action. It takes 55 minutes to machine a single Nokia 6 from a solid block of 6000 series aluminium. It then receives two separate anodising processes, taking over ten hours to complete, with each phone being polished no less than five times. The end result is an aluminium unibody with the highest level of visual and structural quality.” HMD Global stated.

It has a bright hybrid in-cell 5.5” 1080p Full HD display with a 2.5D contoured glass with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection.

At the top front lies the small Nokia logo, the proximity sensor, the earpiece and the 8 megapixel shooter. At the bottom is a capacitive “back” and “recent app” buttons as well as the physical home button which has an embedded fingerprint sensor. To the left side of the Nokia 6 is the power/lock key and volume rocker.

The device will probably have a USB-C port and a headphone jack. As to where these ports located, we will never know until the phone is available. At the back of the device lies the 16 megapixel snapper with dual tone flash and the Nokia logo of course.

Camera and other features

As expected, the device will run on Android 7 Nougat out of the box and will have a stock Android UI.

Nokia 6 will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon ™ 430 octa-core processor with X6 LTE modem for “excellent battery life and superior graphic performance”, Adreno 505 GPU and 3000mAh of battery which has a fast charging capability.

The Nokia 6 has an 8 megapixel FFC and a 16 megapixel RFC with Phase Detection Autofocus and dual tone flash for more natural look. Both with f/2.0 aperture lenses with exclusive camera UI.

Nokia 6 will also come with an exclusive feature called Dolby Atmos which HMD describes to “create powerful, moving audio that seems to flow all around users”.

The global variant of the device is yet to be announced at MWC 2017.
